Miami is photogenic. Its long twilights, interrupted by silhouettes of concrete and backlit palm trees, lend it a light-hearted, fun city look. The bay, cruise ships, highways, restaurants, and nightclubs seamlessly blend into its picturesque, vacation-style appearance. But it’s also true that beneath this façade lies a lot of intensity and grit, which appeals to those looking to uncover some of the city’s deeper character.

This duality is captured in the photographs showcased in The Stage Miami exhibition, presented in June 2024 at IDArtlab, an art space located on the border between Wynwood and Allapattah. Organized by ArtMedia Gallery and curated by José Antonio Navarrete, the exhibition brought together works by four Miami-based photographers: GA Jakubovich, Zachary Balber, Mitya Trotsky, and Rainy Silvestre.

GA Jakubovich presents a grid of urban scenes alternating between day and night shots. His work is characterized by its directness and attention to minute details. He also explores enclosed domestic or corporate environments, always with a meticulous eye for detail.
Zachary Balber stages mysterious and playful scenes in opulent mansions, creating a counterpoint between real estate photography and performative experience.

Mitya Trotsky, known for his rigorously structured approach, captures the interior atmosphere of semi-destroyed apartments—perhaps awaiting demolition or in line to be remodeled. Through the windows, fragments of the exterior landscape appear obliquely.

Rainy Silvestre takes a straightforward look at the façades of Little Havana, an eclectic neighborhood associated with Cuban immigration. Painted in bright colors and richly decorated, the houses in this part of the city retain the mixed influence of a hybrid culture.

In the photographs of these four artists, Miami reveals itself as a stage where diverse situations unfold. Yet, in each case, under any circumstance, the city retains its seductive face and best profile for the scrutinizing eye. As the popular saying goes, “what counts is the first look.” After that, the unveiling of appearances follows
