Have you ever flipped through a fashion magazine and thought, “Gorgeous, but completely impractical”? You’re not alone. Runway shows are a playground for creativity, often showcasing outlandish looks that push boundaries and spark conversation. While these avant-garde pieces are undeniably captivating, they rarely translate seamlessly to everyday life.
So, how do we bridge the gap between runway fantasy and real-world wearability? Here’s the key: embracing the essence of a trend while adapting it to suit your style and comfort level.
I created a guide to help transform runway looks into wearable looks, using such examples:
Adapt Trends to Your Style
Remember, you are the curator of your style. The basic rule is this: trends seen on the runway can be adapted to fit your unique personality. If oversized blazers are in vogue but feel too overpowering, try a blazer with a slightly relaxed fit.
In my opinion, Capri pants do not look good on anyone. Although they are returning this summer, I will wear regular pencil pants or skip this trend. Mixing and matching trends with your existing wardrobe helps you stay fashionable while remaining true to your style.
Focus on Key Elements
Runway outfits often feature exaggerated elements that can be toned down for daily wear. That’s where your creativity comes in. Identify the key components that define the look, such as a unique print, color palette, or silhouette. Let’s take, for example, the trending NO pants look: huge over runways for summer this year. The idea is to emphasize the top, many times oversized, and keep interest off the bottom part. You can recreate this look using the shortest bottoms (you are comfortable in) and pair them with an oversized shirt. Add a jacket or a blazer for an elevated look.
Simplify the Silhouette
Don’t let the complexity of runway fashion intimidate you. Runway fashion can involve complicated, and oversized silhouettes could be more practical for everyday wear. Simplifying these silhouettes is more manageable than it may seem. If a voluminous gown inspires you, opt for a dress or skirt with a loose feel or more fabric than average so the essence of the original inspiration idea is kept.
Incorporate Statement Pieces
Use statement pieces to bring a touch of runway glamour to your wardrobe. A dramatic runway jacket or an intricately designed top can be paired with simple, classic pieces like jeans or a black skirt to create a balanced look. This approach allows the statement piece to shine without overwhelming the overall outfit.
Mix High and Low Fashion
Combining high-fashion items, typically designer or luxury pieces, with more affordable everyday pieces, often called ‘low fashion,’ creates a stylish yet approachable look. For example, match a designer blouse with budget-friendly jeans or a high-street skirt, achieving a fashionable and attainable balance.
Play with Accessories
Accessories are a versatile way to incorporate runway trends into your wardrobe. Bold belts, statement jewelry, and fashionable bags can transform a simple outfit into something runway-inspired. Experiment with different accessories to find what complements your style and adds a touch of flair.
Confidence is Key
Ultimately, confidence is critical in pulling off any fashion look. Wearing a piece confidently can make even the most daring, runway-inspired outfit seem natural. Embrace your style and wear your choices pridefully, as confidence is the best accessory to any outfit.
Transforming runway fashion into wearable looks may be challenging. Remember, the key is to identify the designer’s main idea for a runway look, keep it simple and add your style. Fashion is about expression, so don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with your style.
